Gas Permeable Contact Lenses

Gas-permeable contacts are used in cases where traditional soft contacts do not achieve the clarity desired by the patient such as in cases of  high astigmatism or corneal irregularities or presbyopia.  Bifocal contacts are available as gas-permeable contacts, which may work better for some patients instead of bifocal soft contacts. Gas-permeable lenses may also be used after different types of corneal surgeries such as LASIK and corneal transplants to make sure that the patient attains the clearest vision possible when their cornea is no longer a perfectly smooth surface. 

Some patients have keratoconus, a condition where their corneas are progressively thinning causing an irregular corneal shape, which causes blur and distortion that can not be corrected well with glasses.   In order to treat this condition, a special kind of  gas permeable contact lens may be used to vault over the irregular cornea and provide a smooth, regular surface for light to come through improving the quality of vision greatly.

Retainer Contact Lenses to Correct Nearsightedness

Gas Permeable contact lenses can also be fit to be worn during the night to softly shape the cornea and correct nearsightedness so glasses or contacts are not needed during the day. This process is reversible so the contacts must be worn regularly during the night  to ensure clear vision during the day. This is a very good option for people who do not want to be bothered with glasses or contacts during the day and are too young for LASIK..  Studies have shown that this process can slow the progression of nearsightedness in children.  So this is a great option.

Hybrid Contact Lenses

When gas permeable lenses are too unstable or uncomfortable, hybrid contact lenses are a great option.  Hybrid contact lenses consist of a gas-permeable center surrounded by an outer ring made of soft contact lens material. This configuration provides the comfort of a traditional soft contact while retaining the visual clarity of gas-permeable lenses.
